ABOUT

Hello, I'm Christina - Founder and Creative Director of Grá Designs!

After completing an M.A. in Philosophy and stints in London, France and Germany I moved to NY in the late 90s to work as a stylist. Choosing accessories was my favorite part of every styling decision and I still went home at night and pursued my jewelry making hobby at my coffee table. Soon other stylists started requesting my jewelry for their photo shoots and in 2013 the birth of my beloved; my son Brooklyn, inspired me to turn my jewelry hobby into a full time career.

THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND

I grew up in Ireland and 'grá' means 'love' or 'beloved' in my native language. Gra expresses my maternal love, my love and passion for designing jewelry and as a reminder to connect with others in a meaningful way.

For years my most prized possession was an abalone shell necklace my Mother  brought me from a trip to Israel when I was 10 years old. For me it symbolized exotic, faraway places I had yet to visit and all the possibilities awaiting me when I grew up. It also planted the seed that we ascribe value and meaning to our possessions and not vice versa.

I feel deeply connected to the tribal use of jewelry, not only to adorn oneself, but to communicate messages of tribal affiliation, communal celebrations and personal rites of passage. My son, husband and I always wear the red silk 'My Tribe.." bracelet. It makes me feel connected to them when we are apart. If you are like me, you believe meaning is found in the smallest details of our lives - and  the jewelry we choose to wear reflects that.

Le grá (with love),

Christina.
